Bitlocker Encryption is Essential for Your PC in 2024

About BitLocker

BitLocker is Microsoft's built-in full-disk encryption technology for Windows. BitLocker helps to protect unauthorized access to papers and other critical data saved on your starting disk. BitLocker employs AES encryption with a 128-bit or longer key. This feature requires a Professional, Enterprise, or Education edition of Windows 8 or above. This lesson will only cover PCs that are already members of our ADS Windows domain, as the process is more involved for devices that are not.

This method requires a computer that has a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) that is enabled and active. A TPM is a chip in your computer that only processes encrypted cryptographic keys. Once BitLocker is fully configured, your drive will not be available until Windows can locate and use your unique TPM to access the encrypted disk. If you try to enable BitLocker and Windows tells you that it can't find a TPM, you either don't have one or it needs to be enabled in the BIOS. For additional assistance, please fill out a Help Request form on the BLR website. Most Dell desktop and laptop computers on the UCSB campus have a TPM.

Turn on BitLocker

Note that enabling BitLocker will necessitate local administrator access on the PC. If your account does not have enough rights, please contact BLR for help.

1. To attain the Start Menu or Start Screen, click on the Start button (or press the Windows key in your keyboard). Type BitLocker and then pick out the Manage BitLocker choice.

2. Select Turn On BitLocker.

3. Select a method for backing up your healing key. This key is necessary to recover your encrypted data if something happens that stops your machine from booting up properly in the future. This key will be automatically backed up to another ADS location, so select a handy and secure way for saving a copy of the key.

4. Choose how an lousy lot of your strain to encrypt. Windows recommends encrypting only the usable disk region for logo spanking new PCs and Windows installations. This permits the process to be finished speedy, and any new facts created afterwards is probably routinely encrypted.

Encrypting the entire drive takes longer, but it is more efficient in the long run for computers and drives you have already begun to use. If you want to retrieve data ,download our BLR Bitlocker data recovery tool.

5. Finally, click the box labeled Run BitLocker data recovery software. This will restart the machine and thoroughly test your disk and TPM before encryption begins. It may take some time, but it could save you from having to deal with difficulties later.

After you click Continue and restart your computer, BitLocker will do a system check, start Windows backup, and begin encrypting your disk immediately. BLR Tools  has already set all of the necessary configuration for BitLocker via ADS, so nothing else is required.
